Tent School Visit - II

The Visit to the Tent School this time was precise to gather the actual requirements of the school which we were not able to collect last time because of language issue.

We visited the School with our Team, assisted by Mr Ravikumar, who is already a part of a lot of NGOs and who helped us in this regard to gather the exact requirements which we can work on with a priority and in hand fund basis.

The Crux of the requirements laid by the Teacher and the person in charge was mostly related to the infrastructure. The requirements being A need for a water purifier, A Door to be fixed for the class for security concern, Mats to be provided for the class as all students were found sitting on the floor and also Stationary as this school runs all 12 months.
For Stationary we asked the Teacher to collectively give us the details on Student name and their requirements for stationary as per age so that we can support them to their best.

Our team is working on the requirements and will be organizing an event with this school starting by 1st of May.

Going forward we are also looking for some more events in Chennai , Srinagar and Bangalore.

VISIT REPORT

First we went to the Main School and spoke to the two teachers who were having their lunch, we asked them about the infrastructure and facilities in the main school, Everything looked in place in first glance itself. They looked satisfied as most of the things were funded from one or the other source., as they provided the details too. When inquired about their needs, one of the teacher told us that they need some more teachers for the school as it was very difficult for 2 teachers to manage all 5 classes. They also informed us that water provided to them from one of the source was insufficient sometimes also they felt a need of Almiras for each class to keep all the books, notebooks.

After this we proceeded to the Tent School, a small boy studying in class 5 accompanied us till the Tent School. He knew Hindi a bit so it helped us to ask him the details about the school. He was bare foot and on asking him about the reason he told most of his school friends did not have the footers. We inquired about the studies and facilities. He told everything was good. He enjoyed studying.

We proceeded to the Tent School, that area had all construction going on, all dumps of construction material was all over. We reached some 500mts from the main road, their was the Tent School, with only one room, one table, one Almira and 2 chairs. All small kids were running here and there. There were 2 ladies, one was the Teacher and another was a Volunteer. The Teacher of the Tent school told us that there are 50 students but we saw only10-15 kids in the class. Their were 2 boards, some old charts, some chalks, 2 buckets of water, some Slates for the students. All stationary, books and note books were provided to them by some sources.

When asked to the teacher why the students don't have any notebooks and books in their hands right now, she informed us that books they have completed and note books are over., So they are learning through blackboards now (verbally). We asked some of the students to read out whatever was written on the board, all were very enthusiastic and liked that, we also asked some of them to write down their names on our diary.

2 Students (Sharana and Shivraja) wrote their names in the diary:

We inquired about the facilities for Tent School so she also complained about the water facility. They also lacked a proper toilet. They either had to use the main school's Toilets(which was some 500mts away) or they need to search some corners their itself(which they did mostly). In food (breakfast and lunch) was provided to them.

Over all visit was Good. One thing which lacked from our side was communication problem, which we will require to fulfill before the next visit. We will appreciate if someone can voluntarily help us out in this regard.

Thank you.
